From the streets to the classroom

December 13th, 2007 by SR (Coimbra, Portugal) · No Comments

A group of egyptian girls during gym time and with their arts project teacher in a shelter. The girls that are taken in to the shelter are often children of Egypt’s rural poor or from families living in shantytowns on the outskirts of Cairo. They may sleep on the pavement or in public gardens, face a constant threat of rape, and sniff glue to dull the pain and numb the cold. The shelter takes in unmarried girls from the street that are not already pregnant. Reuters wrote an article about these little women.
