“We are scared the Army is constructing the bridge and then they can come with the troops and more soldiers, we couldn’t sleep at night, whenever we hear any noise, we thought it’s over, they will force us to leave,” says Ahmed Abdel Samad, 51 years old. Ahmed is not from Gaza. He is from Karsaya, Cairo, Egypt.
Karsaya is an Island in the Nile, with 200 habitants, 75 acres (1 acre= 4840 square yards) in area. Last October, a businessman who is an NDP (Mubarak political party) member, wanted to make a big project on Karsaya, so the government decided that Karsaya people should leave.
“Nobody from the government is telling us clearly what’s happening. It’s dark, we don’t know what we would face,” continues Ahmed. Ahmed was born on and has lived on Karsaya with his parents all his life. He got married and had children who grew up on Karsaya. “We don’t know other home except Karsaya,” he says.
On this peaceful island, people make a living from agriculture and fishing. “We don’t even buy anything from outside. We eat from our hand work,” says Ahmed. Karsaya people use a sort of big boat to reach the beach of the Nile when they need to.
