Lebanon still without a President

December 23rd, 2007 by LM (Beirut, Lebanon) · No Comments

I just needed to write it down. The last time we had a president was on november 23rd 2007. Maybe Santa will hear the Lebanese’s prayers. But till then, the Baabda presidential palace will still be empty since, for the 10th time, the parliament session to elect a president has been postponed.

The speaker, Nabih Berry   said he was going to keep calling for an electoral session, but everyone knows, from Hezbollah’s secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah   to former army commander, general Michel Aoun that no president will be elected if no political consensus is reached first. All these three political leaders are part of the lebanese opposition. The majority who runs the government, and who is called the 14 of March movement - because of the 14 of march 2005 rally who came ahead of the end of the syrian military occupation - is also reluctant to conclude a agreement that will lead her to lose her majority status.

Both political forces are backed by forign countries. The 14 of March is backed by the US and Europe, while the opposition is backed by Syria and Iran, since the Lebanese still didn’t learn lessons from the past and still listen to foreign advice.
