The forgotten magic mountains

February 14th, 2008 by AP (Lisboa, Portugal) · 4 Comments

After several days away for vacations, I’m back and want to share with you some pictures of the beautiful province of Trás-os-Montes (literally, behind the hills), in northeast Portugal.
Away from the big cities, difficult to access due to curling roads, the region has been quite forgotten by the central government and younger generations are leaving to find employment elsewhere. But the amazing landscapes – with granitic mountains and small rivers –, the life in the villages still attached to ancient traditions, and the amazing cuisine makes the region one of the most interesting for visitors in Portugal.

Alex, thank you for the remark. I changed the privacy of the photos so that everybody can see it. I hope the problem is solved!

Thanks for posting these AP - it’s amazing to see a ‘holiday brochure’ place in the winter and the valley is beautiful. The last photo here even looks a bit like a place up in the north of England to me - lots of mossy ancient dry-stone walls! I’ve been stuck in London too long and I need to get out - I’m off to a wedding in a barn in the countryside this weekend and I can’t wait. Hope life is good xx

Very beautiful photos, brava! The colour of the nature in winter is amazing!
I was in Galicia for a couple of days last week and I liked it very much. I have never been to Portugal but I was so close!
