The nine-month old blockade of the Gaza Strip is turning into the worst humanitarian crisis since the Israeli occupation began more than 40 years ago, in 1967. Humanitarian organisations reveal the hard reality Gazans experience in their everyday life.
In a region where 56% of the population are children, supplies of food, water, sanitary care and education are not at all given. 1.5 million Palestinians on the territory cry for the basics.
3 out of 4 residents depend their survival on the humanitarian help.
Unemployment has reached 40%, while 30% of houses do not have running water. Electricity cuts happen on a daily basis. Although hospitals are facing up to 12 hours of power cuts daily, patients in need of emergency treatment are not granted permits to leave Gaza.
Non governmental organisations view the Israeli blockade as illegal under the international law and ask European Union to put pressure on Israelis in order to open the borders with Gaza. Israel, on the other hand, just speaks for legal self-defence….
