An equal government

April 16th, 2008 by AP (Lisboa, Portugal) · 3 Comments

This news has some days, but I think good news don’t have expiration date: for the first time in Spanish political history, women outnumber men in the new Cabinet! Socialist prime-minister Jose Luis Zapatero chose eight men and nine women for his second term. Two of the nominations are even more surprising: Carme Cachón is the Spain’s first female defence minister (a position traditionally occupied by men) and the first pregnant women in the government; Bibiana Aido was nominated to lead the new Equality ministry, becoming the younger member ever in a national Cabinet. An example that many other countries should follow!
Here is the complete list of the new female ministers (from left to right in the photo, Zapatero is in the middle):
Science and Innovation Minister: Cristina Garmendia
Development Minister: Magdalena Alvarez,
Education Minister: Mercedes Cabrera,
Defence Minister: Carme Chacon,
Deputy Prime Minister: Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega,
Public Administration: Minister Elena Salgado,
Equality Minister: Bibiana Aido,
Housing Minister: Beatriz Corredor
Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister: Elena Espinosa

Esto es un sueno de gobierno!
In Italy Berlusconi announced that there will be 4 women in his new gouvernement. Because he knows there must be some women in a gouvernement nowadays. They will be good looking and smiling as a woman should be.

This has reminded me of an article I read in the Observer - n’oubliez pas les ‘Sarkozettes’!!

The link to the article is here, though unfortunately it lacks the full-page glossy pictures of four glamorous women striding across the red carpet:

Though I think all this is great, in terms of the media I do wonder what we’re supposed to think when we read articles like this - ‘Oh la la, is it possible we can have everything?! Good looks, nice dresses, AND a serious political career?’

    Forgive my cynicism…

JE CROIS QUE LE VERITABLE EVENEMENT SERA LORSQUE L ON CESSERA DE SOULIGNER LE NOMBRE DE FEMME DANS UN GOUVERNEMENT ET QUE CE SERA DEVENU TOUT A FAIT NORMAL ET BANAL QUE DES FEMMES GOUVERNENT. JE NE VOIS PAS POURQUOI ELLE DEVRAIENT ETRE PARTICULIEREMENT BELLE OU SEXY EN PLUS.
    VIVEMENT DONC…LA BANALISATION DES FEMMES.
