Mediterranean in peril

May 6th, 2008 by MP (Athens, Greece) · 1 Comment

Is the Mediterranean in peril? According to scientific data, presented in an environmental conference held in Athens, the Mediterranean would be the first to suffer intensely from the effects of global warming. It is not only a theory. Mediterranean countries have already witnessed a major temperature rise, in comparison with the rest of the world. According to E.U. Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, the average temperature rise for the Mediterranean is 0, 95% while in other parts of the world is 0, 74%.

As a result, new fish species are now being discovered in the Mediterranean basin. At the same time, tropical fish seem to “move” from Indian Ocean in the Mediterranean Sea. At the three-day summit, United Nations and European officials argued that bio fuels are the answer to climate change. However, they must be developed more selectively in order to combat climate change and prevent competition with food-related crops. Especially in our region, where climate change is intense, experts believe, bio fuels must be developed in any case so as to prevent further damage to the environment.
