Romanian Sounds
Just to get us ready for Bucharest, this the beautiful voice of Gabi Lunca, a Roma gypsy/folk singer. She sings songs such as ”Omul Bun n-are noroc” (The good have no luck) and “Superata sint pe lume” (I am sad in this world), though in the tradition of sorrowful female singers there’s something very distinctive about the soul in her voice, melancholy but defiant, low and strong - some of the same qualities that made Edith Piaf so remarkable, perhaps. As langauge is something we’re always coming up against on this blog, and as I don’t think any of us speak Romanian, music like this is a great reminder that you don’t always have to understand all the words to sense the meaning! I first heard her music here on BBC Radio 3, a quiet programme on late at night that features all kinds of music from around the world. The whole programme is worth listening to if you’re at your computer, Gabi Lunca was the second track on the playlist this week, and the beautiful ‘Azi e nor, maine-i senin’ was played the week before and stopped me in my tracks.
