Two ships, carrying activists from 17 countries, will sail next Tuesday from Cyprus to Gaza and will try to break the Israeli siege of the Palestinian territory. The two ships, as it was announced in Athens, will start their journey from Piraeus and will stop at Greek ports to receive supporters. Then will reach the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, bound for Gaza on the 6th or 7th August. The Free Gaza Movement hopes to draw attention to the plight of 1.4 million Palestinians suffering shortage of everything from food to fuel.
The Gaza’s Strip waters are patrolled heavily by the Israeli navy. The Israeli control has been intensified, since last year, when Palestinian Islamic Movement Hamas seized control over the territory. The organisers said that they had not notified Israeli authorities of their plan and they are prepared for resistance. Amongst those travelling, will be a 84 year old Holocaust survivor, a Catholic nun and the sister in law of former Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair.
The organisation « Free Gaza» will carry humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
