Seven things I love about Cairo drivers!

February 26th, 2009 by SM (Cairo, Egypt) · No Comments

1- We always respect traffic lights. Come on guys admit it. Basically when the light is green we stop and when it is red we move on. Yellow! Nah that is not up to our standards!

2- We never notice other people around us, hey! We’re too busy respecting the traffic lights! So, people walking in the streets or on side walks are invisible to our sights.

3- I can’t be that negative, after all, if a cat is by any chance crossing the street, for its bad or good luck, we will either suddenly stop, we can’t waste such a precious pet’s life, even if the car from behind hits you or not, the most important thing is, let’s face it, we’re champions! We saved the cat’s life! Or, simply we run over it.

4- We’re polite. Of course we are! Especially when a car, taxi or minibus driver suddenly plans to change lanes from the very right to the very left, without using any sort of signals, I mean who cares if the car has signals or not anyway, he or she would always raise up his/her left hand as a way of apologizing to others, after all, no harm done, you just ran over the cat.

5- Side walks are simply a totally different story in our unique Cairo! Why? Well, they fit all sizes! Yes, so basically, on a side walk you’ll find, people walking, car parking, animals wandering, but most importantly, all type of coffee shops and ambulant illegal merchants.

6- I have to say that we’re extremely quiet people. Using the horn of the car is just a way of expressing our emotions! Like joy about different events, weddings, flirting, greeting other drivers one may know especially those in heavy trucks, or simply expressing less happier emotions like insulting your neighbor in the other car by using the horn repeatedly as non stop melody. Why? I told you, he ran over the cat! Duh… are you reading?

7- The most impressive thing about Cairo drivers especially male drivers is that they only respect big, huge and powerful cars. Who said size does not matter? So, if your car is as tiny as mine, you’re basically non existent! They’ll smash you, curse upon you, especially if you’re a female driver, because you’re not speeding up, crush you, or in best case scenarios, if somebody out there finally notices that you’re driving this tiny hatchback little car, he’ll simply decide to only push you over from his way as a sign of respect!

Do you still want to drive in hectic streets of Cairo?
