Checklist for Finding the Best Flights Around the World

Traveling is fun, especially if you are traveling thousands of miles for spending a holiday or visiting your old friend. Traveling on buses on trains is not imaginable for long distances making air travel the ultimate option. The prices of air travel differ by country and the airlines. Sometimes the difference is very large and choosing the cheaper one can save lots on costs. But low cost flights may always not be the best option. Low cost flights are relatively less furnished and provide very less facilities to the passengers. Here are some tips and tricks to help you pick the best flight to any destination.

Your nation or place of visit makes the largest difference in the flight costs. Journeying from Melbourne to New York would cost a couple of folds more than traveling from Melbourne to Sydney. If you are traveling very far, you have to work your backside off before finding the cheapest flight deal. Start looking for the cheap airlines months before your journey and book it a few weeks before because inexpensive flights get packed easily.

The airfares in general hike up in the tourist season. For example, should you wish to travel to Thailand during the summer, you will have to pay more because during summer, more holidaymakers flock to Thailand. So, if you are a budget traveler, it is ideal to travel during the off seasons. The increase in price of fuel also induces the air fare to upsurge. Airlines therefore charge much more than the regular price to meet the expenses. But the slump in oil costs can be beneficial as airlines bring down the air fare on such events. You need to understand this and if you want to travel cheap, better not purchase your tickets when the oil prices are high.

Generally, airlines offer flights at cheaper or discounted rates particularly during their anniversaries or some special occasion. Keep tabs on such announcements and get a ticket when the discount offer is still valid. Internet is the best source to keep yourself informed on them. But generally, such announcements are also made through newsprints and Televisions.

One thing that you need to understand is that the cheapest flight is not always the best flight. If you look for more luxury, economy flights typically are not the best option for you. Research online and see what other people say about an airline. Start a discussion at travel forums enquiring the pros and cons of a flight and see what other individuals say about it. On cheap flights, you by and large do not get any snacks or drinks. You will need to compromise with many things if you are traveling via inexpensive flights.

You can have the benefit of cheap flights during certain festive times of year. Like during Christmas and Thanksgiving Day, the air travel prices are down between 15 to 20 percent for long distance flights. The prices are taken down even for short distance flights but by comparatively lesser amount. Some airways offer round trip packages if you are traveling long distances and to multiple cities. They often come with a holiday package but there are individual travel packages too. If you need to make such trips, such packages may be handy and very affordable.

If you are buying your tickets from a travel agent, be heedful to check out the prices with a grateful of them. Sometimes, the price for the same flight can differ from one travel agent to another. It will cost you less to buy direct from the concerned airlines. Do proper research on the internet and you'll unquestionably find the best flight deal.

This is a comprehensive list and rarely do we do every suggestion listed at the same time.

A thoroughly thought through combination of ideas will make them feel very welcome!

How to Start Planning a European Trip on a Budget

You can approach the planning of a trip in a number of ways. For me I narrow it down to where I badly want to go and then figure out how much it will cost. From here I can add or subtract locations or side trips. As I'm currently beginning to plan a trip to Europe I thought I might walk through the process and demonstrate at least how I begin to put a trip together. Do be aware that the costs listed below are from internet searches I performed on January 30th 2008 and should be understood to be samples of potential prices only.

Recently my Dad (who has never been to Europe) asked me to go with him and show him around at the end of April. After prodding for specifics his only request was that it be Italy, Spain or Germany. With only about 10 days to spend overseas I decided against Germany. Although Germany is probably my favorite country in Europe, Italy or Spain can really give the first time traveler to Europe a sense of being in Europe in a small amount of time. In Italy you have the normal circuit of Rome, Florence and Venice all within relatively close proximity to each other, making for easy and quick train travel. In Spain, my favorite cites Barcelona, Girona, Granada, Seville and Madrid, are likewise relatively close and inexpensive. Personally, there is so much about Germany I love which is at different ends of the country a quick 7-10 day trip would not be enough time.

With my location dragged down and a trip duration in mind I begin with the most important part of a trip to Europe, the flight. Using kayak.com I start by plugging in the major airports I would like to fly in and out of. Since we want to go to Italy we can start with (for simplicity wounds) New York to Rome with flexible dates during the time frame I can get off work. Of course you will want to plug in the nearest international airport to you. Searching within the last week of April through the first week in May I found the cheapest flight to be: NYC- to – Rome from the 29th through the 9th = $ 756 With this as my working number for ticket prices I look into other possible cities to fly into for cheaper tickets NYC – to – Florence from the 29th through the 13th = $ 956 —- nope NYC- to – Venice from the 26th through the 10th = $ 850 —- nope NYC- to – Milan from the 25th through the 9th = $ 852 —- nope Not finding anything cheaper I then start thinking about flying into one city and flying out of another. This has the benefit of saving the time (which is limited) of backtracking as well as the cost of an extra train ticket back. Since my working plan is to fly into Rome and visit Venice last I check these two cities on the dates of the cheapest flight above. NYC- to – Rome: Venice- to -NYC from the 29th through the 9th = $ 852

For $ 100 more I can eliminate 4-5 hours of travel as well as a train ticket that will cost at least $ 100 one way. So far this looks like a better deal. Just for the sake of argument then, why not check into what it would cost to throw in a wonderful Spanish city, Barcelona. My Dad wanted to see Spain and an over night ferry from Barcelona to a city near Rome is reliably fun and cheap when you will think about the cost you will be paying for accommodation anyways. NYC- to -Barcelona: Venice- to-NYC from the 29th through the 9th = $ 816

Well, we almost saved 40 bucks and get to see Barcelona. If we can get from Barcelona to Rome for around $ 40 we are actually making money (well not really but you get the idea). Sticking with the ferry idea for now a quick check of directferries.co.uk gives me: Barcelona -to – Civitavecchia (near Rome) (20 hours overnight) = $ 65 on Grimaldi Ferries Considering accommodation is going to be anywhere from $ 25- $ 35 in Rome or Barcelona and we saved $ 36 on the flight by going into Spain this sounds reasonable for a quick visit to Barcelona and does not cost us more at all. For even more savings we can try to fly from Barcelona to Rome but we must keep in mind that 1. It will not be an overnight flight so accommodation will be an issue again and 2. Budget airlines do not usually fly out of the major airports, making travel outside the city and issue. None-the-less checking clickair and ryanair for a few samples does not hurt. clickair has Barcelona- to – Rome (Fiumicino) on the 2nd = $ 29 (the 2nd though is a bit late) ryanair has Barcelona (Girona) – to – Rome (Ciampino) on the 1st = $ 20

All in all we now know that stopping in Barcelona is a great idea and getting to Rome will be cheap and easy. With our air plans figured out we can start to look at what this trip is going to cost us in ground transportation. I prefer trains over renting cars in Europe; I just can not relax in a car and the cost of gas and concentrating on the road usually outweighs the freedom. With that in mind it's time to figure out if buying point to point tickets is cheaper than buying a rail pass. My rough plan is to fly into Barcelona head to Rome (fly or sail) then go from Rome to Florence to Venice. Ill check the cost of point to point tickets between these cities as well as a few side trips to get a spread of costs using the worksheets at noambit.com Rome- to -Florence (1-2 hours) = $ 65 Florence- to-Venice (2-3 hours) = $ 58 Rome- to -Pisa (3-4 hours) = $ 47 Pisa- to -Florence (1-2 hours) = $ 19 Florence- to-Rimini (1 hour) = $ 50 Rimini-to-Venice (1-2 hours) = $ 70 With these numbers we can see that our simplest trip, Rome, Florence, Venice, is going to cost roughly $ 123. Our most expensive plan, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Rimini and Venice is going to come in around $ 196. A quick look at rail pass prices shows us that we will only really benefit if we want to do the longer trip and then only barely. A four day rail pass (you can travel for any four days within two months) runs about $ 202. About the same as our long trip but also with an included 20% off discount on the ferry from Barcelona. The problem I see here is that traveling that much, especially since we are adding the city in Spain, is not going to give much time to see anything. At this point I'm going to opt to pay full price on the ferry and buy point to point tickets in Italy. Even adding Pisa on is only going to cost about $ 134 total.

To this point, assuming we throw in Pisa (a day trip) on our way to Florence and pay full price to take the ferry over from Spain we are looking to spend about $ 1015 to spend 10 days and see five cities in two countries in Europe. Its time now to figure in accommodation. A rule of thumb for me is to plan on spending a minimum of $ 50 a day for a bed and food. Sometimes this is high (not very) sometimes this is low (more and more each year). For the sake of demonstration however I looked up budget hotels and hostels for the locations I plan on visiting to get a rough idea of what I will be spending. 30th April – Barcelona = $ 20- $ 35 1st May – Boat to Rome = already figured in 2nd-4th – Rome = $ 20 (camping) $ 30 (hostel) 5th-6th – Florence = $ 15- $ 25 7th-8th – Venice = $ 45

What we end up with is a range of $ 200- $ 265 that I need to budget for accommodation. Adding in food takes a bit of guess work but $ 15 dollars a day is a good workable number. If need be you could eat twice at a Mc Donalds and "live" or grab some bread and cheese from a grocery store and still have some left over for a couple slices of pizza or Doner Kebab. Of course if you are going to Italy for the food or wine you will have to plan on spending more money but $ 15 should get you by. Our final cost is going to be the sight seeing and extras (taking the metro, bottle of wine, train reservations). Since my Dad has never been there I will want to show him the Vatican museum, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, The statue of David, la Sagrada Familia and a variety of other things. For a trip like we have planned above, in Italy for only 10 days, $ 150- $ 200 should be fine.

When all is said and done I can count on spending around $ 1365 – $ 1480 for the whole trip. This, as we have seen is rather bare bones so there is not a lot that can be cut if this were out of my budget (which it is very close to being). I could of course opt out of going to Pisa but extremely in terms of trains this only saves me $ 10 and that does not seem worth skipping a city I have never seen. What you will decide to cut (sometimes the duration you're overseas or how many cities you can see) will depend on what is important to you on this visit to Europe. What is important is that you find a way to fulfill your dream of traveling to your country of choice and I hope that this article helps you find a way to make it work with a limited budget.

How to Plan a Caribbean Vacation in 5 Easy Steps

A vacation is something we all need or think we need at one point or another in our lives. Life may be getting stressful or you might have time away from work. Maybe you came into some money and want to get away to relax. A Caribbean vacation is the perfect thing to do with it. You will have the experience of a life time and memories that will last forever through photographs and in your mind. There are a few important steps you need to follow in order to get ready to go and everything set into place.

Get a passport. You can not travel in and out of the country without having one. You also want to make sure you have it ahead of time so that you're not stuck waiting for it to arrive and stressing whether it will or not. Some places also require a visitor's visa along with your passport so check ahead of time. This will ensure that you're not stressing out at the last minute.

Pick where in the Caribbean you want to travel to. There are a few different islands that are available to travel to and each of them has their own recreational opportunities. People who want common locations will probably hit up Jamaica while those who want some seclusion and privacy can hit up. Lucia and Antigua since they're also gorgeous places to visit.

Select the type of vacation you are planning on taking. A cruise vacation is a very popular type for people because they get to enjoy the sea while experiencing new places. Not everyone is fond of being on a boat though and in these situations it may make more sense to choose a vacation at a resort which offers all the opportunities you could hope for. Some of these vacations are all inclusive and include everything that you would probably need while traveling and give you the ultimate experience as well.

Decide the type of vacation you are going to take depending on how many people are going to be in your party. Cruises are ideal for families, singles, and couples as well since there is something for everyone to enjoy and the reserves cater to this demographic. Some resorts are also suitable for families and singles along with large groups of friends. Your family would probably enjoy spending their vacation at one of the popular resorts like the Beaches Negril Resort & Spa and the Antigua St. Louis. James' Club.

Know when your ideal vacation time is going to be. Flexible dates allow you to save money. Traveling packages are always more expensive during the winter months when people want to go enjoy the warmth. This is from December to April. The summer months of June-August will give you cheaper prices if price is an issue for you.

Be sure to have all of your clothing packed ahead of time and definitely do not forget to have your camcorder to capture those special moments.

Forehead Sweating – The Top 5 Causes

Some things are easy to hide like the helm that comes a loose from your pants. Then there are other things like hiding forehead sweat and that’s like trying to stop the rain. And as hard as it is to keep profuse sweating unnoticed, imagine how impossible it is to camouflage forehead sweating. What’s even worse is sweating starts without warning. Your face begins to get hot from the inside out. Next, you start to shine, then beads of sweat begins to roll down your face. Last but not least, you are sweating like a fire hydrant, full force with no cut-off valve. This common occurrence for excessive sweating sufferers is irritating and aggravating, not to mention embarrassing. Unfortunately, the common causes of forehead sweating are everyday activities in most of our lives.

Most people don’t really know that excessive sweating affects 3 percent of our population. Part of the reason for that is because our medical professionals didn’t see it as a serious problem. When patients would schedule an appointment because of excessive sweating; we’ve heard, some reported sentiments such as: go home and stop complaining. Those professionals were obviously uninformed and didn’t realize the psychological side that’s associated with over-sweating.

Most likely if you are a victim of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), you may have experienced this. While modern medicine still doesn’t quite know exactly how to stop excessive sweating or what are common causes, there are clues from other sufferers that have gone before you.

There are many causes that seem to bring about forehead sweating, listed below are a few of them. Keep in mind that they will vary from person to person.

Anxiety: Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic trigger that goes off when we are under pressure. A few symptoms of anxiety; racing heart beat, stomach butterflies and the jitters.

Stress: Stress is an emotion that’s unavoidable. We all experience stress in our daily lives. However, chronic stress can be very detrimental to our over-all health.

Anger: Unless you are Mother Theresa; anger is something that you have experienced. Anger normally builds up fast and ferocious. It’s normally a gut reaction to a situation or problem.

Fear: Fear is a crippling emotion. It’s an emotion of thought. Many times we are fearful of the unknown. We become fearful when we lose the ability to think rationally and logically.

Excitement: Building excitement takes a lot of energy. Burning the necessary amounts of energy causes our bodies to heat up and once we heat up, the brain reports to the nervous system. It sends a signal to keep us cool and this process is known as sweating.

There you are, 5 underlying causes of forehead sweating. Emotions are one of the main causes of forehead-sweating. The average person has a tendency to sweat when they are nervous, stressed, angry, excited or anxious; but those that suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) will NO Doubt sweat. And more than likely it will show all over their face.

How to Put an Army IRR Packet Together

Packet requirements, what you need to include in your IRR packet:

1. IRR packet checklist, based on Figure B-59 of USAR Pamphlet 600-5.

2. DA Form 4561, Request for Reserve Component Assignment or Attachment. Completely filled and signed by the Soldier and the Commander.

3. Your statement/justification letter and backing documentation. This is based on the reasons listed in AR 140-10.

4. Chain of Command Recommendation.

5. Cogent Personal Reason. If the specific reason isn’t listed in AR 140-10, it requires an exception to policy by your OFTS.

6. Counseling Statement (DA Form 4856). This is from the commander to the Soldier and is face to face. Are you in receipt of a bonus? This counseling statement must warn you about bonus termination or recoupment.

7. Counseling Statement (DA Form 4856). From the Soldier’s servicing career counselor to the Soldier; it’s also face to face.

Valid reasons for transferring from the Troop Program Unit (TPU) to the Individual Ready Reserves (IRR):

As a TPU Soldier, you can forward an IRR transfer packet up the chain of command. There’s no guarantee for that packet’s approval, or for your transfer to the IRR.

If you want to improve your TPU to IRR transfer chances, refer to the valid reasons listed in AR 140 -10, Chapter 4, Paragraph 9. If you have enough documentations, and facts, to support one or more of these reasons, include them in your IRR packet. This’ll help you make your case for transferring to the IRR.

Employment Conflict:

Let’s say that your employer all of a sudden can’t release you from the work schedule so that you can drill… as your absence would cause an adverse impact on your employer’s operation. Before, this wasn’t an issue. Your employer released you for a weekend, and was able to continue his operation. When they couldn’t release you, you were able to reschedule.

Now? Your employer needs you, on the days you need to drill, in order for the company to continue on with its mission. Conditions had changed since you started working with this employer.

Or, you’re in a company that restructures and eliminates your job. They move you to another part of the company. In this new job, you’re on call to go to different parts of the country, and your schedule is random. You’re not able to do rescheduled training. Your employer can’t spare you for any reserve drill without negatively impacting company operations.

These are just two examples, of which there are many, on how your employment could evolve into something that makes it hard for you to meet TPU requirements.

In your Soldier’s Statement of Justification letter, provide an objective picture of how your employment schedule makes it impractical for you to continue with the TPU. Include statements from your employer to back this justification.

Change of address:

You accept a new job within your company. It’ll pay you more, it’s something that you love doing, and it represents a move up in your civilian career. The catch? You have to go somewhere that’s two days away from the nearest Army Reserve center. Your employer isn’t able to spare you enough time to get to, and return from, the nearest Army Reserve unit.

In this scenario, you’re a TPU Soldier that can’t drill with any Army Reserve unit.

Or, you get a promotion that sends you overseas. Your job location is a long flight away from the nearest Army Reserve Center.

For something like this, you’d be able to submit a packet to transfer to the IRR. In your statement of soldier justification, include employment orders, employment promotion documentations, new job description, an objective picture that details your new job location, your new residence, etc.

Cogent personal reasons:

This is sort of a “catch all” to cover other reasons not specifically covered in AR 140-10.

What you think is a very good reason to transfer may not be what the Army thinks it is. You also have to see this from your unit’s perspective.

You’re asking them to release you, when they need you at the unit during drills and summer training. They don’t have a guarantee that they’ll get a replacement Soldier. You have to convince them to “sign off” on your IRR packet.

Let’s say that you’re “burned out” from doing drills. You just want to “sit around” in the IRR until the “burnt out” phase ends. In your unit’s eyes, this is a subjective reason. They could work with you to where you wouldn’t need to submit an IRR transfer packet.

In this example, your soldier justification letter needs to provide an accurate, objective, picture of how your Army reserve duties contribute to you being burned out. You’ll need letters from your medical professionals to help bolster your justifications.

Whatever the personal reason that you choose, make sure that you could provide an objective picture. Make sure that you could provide factual information from subject matter experts involved with your situation.

You also want to prove that there’s no other way to “solve” your current issue other than to transfer to the IRR. Before you do this, you have to exhaust the means to resolve this with resources that your unit could reference you to.

You completed the TPU portion of your contract, now you’re ready to transfer to the IRR:

As of this writing, everybody that joins the military, for the first time, signed an eight year contract. When a first time enlister signs a 6 year Army Reserve contract, they’re not just signing up for 6 years. When those 6 years are over, that Soldier has an additional 2 years of commitment. They can request transfer to the IRR after their TPU commitment.

This concept applies even if the TPU part of the contract was 3, 4, or 5 years.

Once the TPU portion of the contract is over, they can request transfer to the IRR. They have to continue drilling with the unit until they receive their IRR orders.

Surviving son or daughter:

You’re in the reserves, and pursuing your civilian career. Two years later, your last remaining sibling passes on. You’re now your parents’ only surviving child. This is an unfortunate event, but one that gives you an opportunity to transfer from the TPU to the IRR.

When you write your Soldier justification letter, include documentation proving that you’re now the last/sole surviving child for your parents.

Dependency or hardship makes it impractical to participate in TPU:

Let’s say your family situation changes, and you have to provide extra care and supports to one of your family members. This family member is someone on your dependents list. You don’t have an alternative care plan… nobody else could afford to give up a lot of their time, and sacrifice their employment, to help you out.

This dependent family member needs your presence. Without you, this family member’s welfare is negatively impacted.

Two examples of this category is an “assisted living” situation and a “direct support provider” situation. In these scenarios, a family member is unable to care for him or herself. The family member requires a soldier’s attention, supervision, and direct support to do basic functions.

Statements from doctors, social workers, case managers, and other related people should be included in this packet. Their statement should focus on the nature of the dependency hardship, and on the need for you to be consistently available.

Pregnancy:

If you’re pregnant, you may be able to transfer to the IRR. You have to be MOS qualified, and you can’t be within 3 months of your ETS.

Non selection for retention:

This impacts TPU Soldiers that have received their “official notification of eligibility to retire with pay at 60” letter. This is the “20 year letter.” By regulation, these Soldiers are subjected to a Qualitative Retention Board.

Prior to this board’s convening, the impacted Soldier receives a “pre board” packet. The Soldier is given a couple of options. If the board removes the Soldier from the TPU, which control group would the Soldier like to transfer to?

The Soldier could elect to be transferred to the retired reserves, or to the IRR. Should the qualitative review board decide to remove the Soldier from the TPU, orders will be generated transferring the Soldier to the control group that the Soldier selected.

This is also applicable to TPU Soldiers subjected to the actions of other types of retention boards. In this situation, a Soldier may have the option to transfer to the IRR.

Enrollment into a non-scholarship ROTC:

A “non-scholarship” ROTC program is one that offers the student a chance to participate in an ROTC program without financial benefits. These students don’t get a monthly stipend. These students pay for their own tuition, fees, and other expenses.

Soldiers that get accepted into this type of ROTC program can submit an IRR packet.

Merchant Marine Academy:

If you get accepted into the Merchant Marine Academy, you can submit an IRR transfer packet.

Army Regulation 140-10:

For details on each of these categories, and how to apply under them, read Army regulation 140 -10, Assignments, Attachments, Details, and Transfers.

Counseling statements from the commanding officer and servicing career counselor:

Did you get a bonus for enlisting into your current TPU contract? If your IRR transfer gets approved, you could lose the remainder of your bonus. Depending on your bonus stipulation, you could end up having to pay back the part of your bonus that you received.

If you’re receiving a bonus, you need to be informed of this fact when you submit your IRR packet.

This counseling statement should also inform you of your IRR responsibilities. The commanding officer will include any information that’s important to you. This includes the fact that you must continue to drill with the unit until you receive transfer orders to the IRR.

The career counselor will inform you of opportunities that are available to you in the IRR, including opportunities to reclassify and transfer back to the TPU when personal conditions favor such a move.

IRR transfer packet tips:

1. Are you on your initial contract, with IRR time following your TPU time? By regulation, you’re not supposed to submit your IRR packet until your TPU obligation is complete. You can submit your IRR transfer packet the day after your “TPU ETS” date.

2. After you submit your IRR packet, you have to drill with your unit until you receive orders transferring you to the IRR.

Don’t simply go by what somebody at your unit says. Some Soldiers have stopped drilling after they “completed” their “TPU years,” because they thought they were automatically in the IRR. This wasn’t true, they had to report back to drill.

3. Follow up on your packet. If HRC doesn’t get your packet, they might extend your TPU status to the end of your military service obligation. In this case, you’ll have to drill until your 8 years is up.

4. If you have unresolved medical issues, you have to have these issues resolved before you can transfer to the IRR.

5. IRR Soldiers still have obligations and point requirements to make. However, you could consider the active standby reserves instead of the IRR if you want to “get away” from the TPU temporarily.

In the IRR, you have to get at least 50 points a retirement year.

In the active standby reserves, there’s no requirement for you to get at least 50 points. You maintain your military affiliation, but you’re generally not required to maintain a good year. The active standby reserves is what most people assume the IRR is.

Lessons in Boosting Self-Esteem

This summer my 11 year old Godson, Kendon, is spending a few weeks with me. Despite having an 11pm bedtime, he tends to wake up every morning around 6:30 am and this morning was no different. In my hazy fog of sleep, I could hear the "bing" as he turned on the X-Box so that he could watch Power Rangers on Netflix. Luckily, I had set him up with a pair of headphones, so I never had to hear the TV and could sleep in perfect silence.

Shortly afterwards, I decided that it was time for me to get up and get ready for the day. As I made Kendon a bowl of oatmeal, he took his headphones off and approached the kitchen. My first thought was that he was hungry and wanted to know what I was cooking for breakfast. But to my surprise he asked if he could stay home from summer camp today and work on making a paper boat.

Exactly one week ago, I explained to Kendon that in one week there would be a paper boat challenge where the winner would win a prize.

I took the time to explain to him what a paper boat was and we even watched YouTube videos of last year's challenge. I then told him that it was up to him to figure out how to make the paper boat and to determine what type of paper to use.

Six days went by and Kendon did not utter a sound about the paper boat. I thought that he had completely forgotten since he is so engrossed in the Power Rangers during every waking moment of the day.

So that's why I was taken aback when he woke up remembering that the challenge was today.

I took a few moments to figure out how I wanted to answer this question. Part of me wanted to allow him to stay home and we could make the paper boat together because I really wanted to make a boat and enter the challenge myself. But the other part of me saw this as a learning opportunity concerning procrastination. So as I faced him, I decided to tell him no.

I rarely tell ever him no, since I only get to see him once a year. But I knew that this lesson would stay with him for a lifetime.

I gently told him that waiting to the last minute was not the proper way to do things. I reminded him that he had all week to work on the paper boat but chose to do other things like watch the Power Rangers in his spare time. I ended by explaining to him the importance of priorities and planning.

As he sat at the breakfast bar eating his oatmeal, he looked like a sad puppy. His melancholy face almost made me give in until I asked him what was wrong. He replied by saying that he "really messed up" and he was very upset with himself. That's when I realized that the critical view of one's self that a majority of adults possess, start at moments like this.

And I was not about to let my own Godson put himself down so it was time to raise his self esteem up!

The following things that I told him can apply to anyone who needs a little help with self-esteem.

1. Accept your mistake. Once you have made a mistake, do not ignore it, accept it. What is done is done. Move forward by either fixing the mistake or letting it be. Not all things can be fixed so ask for forgiveness and let it go.

2. Do something that feels good. After you make a mistake, you feel bad about it. So replace that bad feeling with a good one. Do something that you know will be a smile on your face. For Kendon, I knew that he loves to eat chicken. So instead of packing some boring lunchmeat for his lunch, I replaced it with two pieces of chicken from last night's dinner! That put a huge smile on his face.

3. Learn from it. There's a life lesson in every mistake. So take a few minutes to think about what lesson the universe is teaching you at this moment. Your mistake is an opportunity for growth and development. Kendon learned that preparation is important and procrastination may cause you to miss out.
