Please, Do not Make Me Take A Vacation

"I never go on vacation," said a Manhattan real estate agent. "And when I do, I have my computer, my Palm, my e-mail and my cell phone with me at all times."

It seems that our tech toys have become the adult equivalent of an umbilical cord. So how can we live without them?

And what about now, when, as a good citizen, who also does not want to get arrested, you at least have to end your plane trip without their nourishment and comfort? Let's do a checklist of tech tonics that can cause us to experience separation anxiety.

Your laptop. No more making the flight a window to catch up with your work or idle the time away with a video game. Even if you're reunited with the high-tech marvel after the flight, what if you're on a tropical island, marooned on the coconut garden without a high-speed Internet connection?

Your cell phone. No more last minute chats before takeoff or immediate reconnection on landing. How bereft can life get?

Your Palm or Blackberry. Can not take either of those on board either, and, as you know, out of phone numbers and email addresses, out of business, worse yet, cut off from your entire social life, at least, for the seemingly eternal length of the flight.

Your MP3 player. No, no, anything but that! How will your soul survive the deafening silence?

And the relationship to separate from our tech tools is not the only reason many Americans are related to take the vacations that once flew out of their office chairs for. Most Americans also fret, in these days when what used to be called workaholic hours now seem more like half days, that the employee will use the occasion to replace you with someone who has shown promise of never needing something as irresponsible as a vacation, at least, not one that goes on and on for that long ago and faraway interlude of two weeks.

What's an exhausted and tense person to do? Here's our humble but functional answer. Most years we take long weekends, with only an occasional year in which we indulge in a flagrant week or two away from our day-to-day entanglements. We find the possibility of frequent breaks inviting, and we do not get taken out of our lives the way the extended vacations of yore used to separate us from our usual doings. We also find that most of the world is within reach during these three-day to five-day intervals.

Of course, if you're thinking of heading to Australia or the Far East, you may be doing little more than making a U-turn, so better reserve those destinations for the rare times when you dare a week or – dare we even mention the words? – two or even three weeks?

Then again, you can always decide to move to a vacation destination forever, especially when you compare the length of the idylls in other parts of what we loosely refer to as the civilized world.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, as of 2004, in the US full-time employees have 3.9 holiday and vacation weeks off a year, while in the UK they have 6.6 weeks, in France 7, and in Italy 7.9.

But do you really want to part with the good, young USA for an extended or everlasting break? For most of us the thought remains an occasion for separation anxiety that we simply can not endure.

Booking Your Hotel Accommodation at the Last Minute Can Save You Money

Many accommodation providers such as hotels, motels and serviced apartments often have a percentage of their rooms remain unsold in the normal course of business. They sometimes refer to these rooms as “distressed inventory” available at a discounted price. This allows them to realize revenue that would not normally be received. Rooms made available on websites could be discounted by as much as 60%. The term generally used to describe the discounted room rates is last minute accommodation rates or short rates.

You may ask what’s in it for the hotel?

Discounting is not a new concept in this industry, though it has normally been promoted via corporate rates or bulk purchases. This new online delivery of room rates allows the accommodation providers to offer specials to the larger public. Like yesterday’s paper, the supplier would still rather have some revenue for the room than none at all.

A great tip for finding special rate deals is by typing “last minute accommodation rates” and the name of the city into your web search. Although there are many websites promoting these offers, a quick scan of the result pages will reveal those websites that display multiple offers on a single page. This makes for easy comparison between various suppliers. The full or rack rate together with the discount rate could be displayed and the magnitude of the saving becomes apparent.

Tips on booking your stay:

Last minute booking services are almost exclusively advertised online. This is because of the instant confirmations, live updates on availability and the huge audience that now exists online.

But when anyone provides credit card details online, they need to be as vigilant as if they were handing some cash on the street :

– Make sure that the payment pages are secured with HTTPS, as opposed to the regular HTTP address.

– Make sure the website has acceptable terms and conditions, you don’t want to be left empty handed because of the small print.

– The uncertainty of online transactions has led many suppliers to ask for a deposit, instead of full payment up front. This is a reasonable approach, as you would not normally pay for your stay until departure.

– Lastly, make sure the website offering the discount is providing confirmation of your payment and reservation.

Some services offer to “register your interest” and only when you have paid, will they check availability with the hotel or Motel. You may as well just call the provider yourself, if this is the case.

Though it should not need to be said, remember to take receipt of your online booking for check-in. Or if necessary you can call prior to confirm your booking and maybe also advise of check-in times, special needs or requests etc.

When booking your stay for transit over early morning departures, most providers have dedicated sections for accommodation listings close to the airport and also offer a free service or parking for up to a week. Alternatively you want to make sure a shuttle service is available from the motel or that they can organize such a service.

Typically last minute accommodation rates generally apply to the next 4 weeks or 28 days only. So for those spur of the moment spontaneous decisions it is ideal. Remember last minute rates are generally for two people only and you need to inquire if additional people can be accommodated and if so what the charge will be, check for any inclusions or extras on offer too. Inclusions can prove to be of excellent value and include such offerings as free breakfast, a bottle of champagne or drink voucher or perhaps a free shuttle service to and from the airport.

In Europe, coffee was referred to as Satan’s drink, when it was first introduced in 1615. The support of doctors led to the growth coffee houses in and around Europe.

A traveler who is new to Europe will not have difficulty in navigating roads, as it is the easy to find locations. Compared to the United States, Europe is not that vast, but the number of attractions, lure tourists to this fascinating place, each year. Checklist for Finding the Best Flights Around the World

Traveling is fun, especially if you are traveling thousands of miles for spending a holiday or visiting your old friend. Traveling on buses on trains is not imaginable for long distances making air travel the ultimate option. The prices of air travel differ by country and the airlines. Sometimes the difference is very large and choosing the cheaper one can save lots on costs. But low cost flights may always not be the best option. Low cost flights are relatively less furnished and provide very less facilities to the passengers. Here are some tips and tricks to help you pick the best flight to any destination.

Your nation or place of visit makes the largest difference in the flight costs. Journeying from Melbourne to New York would cost a couple of folds more than traveling from Melbourne to Sydney. If you are traveling very far, you have to work your backside off before finding the cheapest flight deal. Start looking for the cheap airlines months before your journey and book it a few weeks before because inexpensive flights get packed easily.

The airfares in general hike up in the tourist season. For example, should you wish to travel to Thailand during the summer, you will have to pay more because during summer, more holidaymakers flock to Thailand. So, if you are a budget traveler, it is ideal to travel during the off seasons. The increase in price of fuel also induces the air fare to upsurge. Airlines therefore charge much more than the regular price to meet the expenses. But the slump in oil costs can be beneficial as airlines bring down the air fare on such events. You need to understand this and if you want to travel cheap, better not purchase your tickets when the oil prices are high.

Generally, airlines offer flights at cheaper or discounted rates particularly during their anniversaries or some special occasion. Keep tabs on such announcements and get a ticket when the discount offer is still valid. Internet is the best source to keep yourself informed on them. But generally, such announcements are also made through newsprints and Televisions.

One thing that you need to understand is that the cheapest flight is not always the best flight. If you look for more luxury, economy flights typically are not the best option for you. Research online and see what other people say about an airline. Start a discussion at travel forums enquiring the pros and cons of a flight and see what other individuals say about it. On cheap flights, you by and large do not get any snacks or drinks. You will need to compromise with many things if you are traveling via inexpensive flights.

You can have the benefit of cheap flights during certain festive times of year. Like during Christmas and Thanksgiving Day, the air travel prices are down between 15 to 20 percent for long distance flights. The prices are taken down even for short distance flights but by comparatively lesser amount. Some airways offer round trip packages if you are traveling long distances and to multiple cities. They often come with a holiday package but there are individual travel packages too. If you need to make such trips, such packages may be handy and very affordable.

If you are buying your tickets from a travel agent, be heedful to check out the prices with a grateful of them. Sometimes, the price for the same flight can differ from one travel agent to another. It will cost you less to buy direct from the concerned airlines. Do proper research on the internet and you'll unquestionably find the best flight deal.

How to Start Planning a European Trip on a Budget

You can approach the planning of a trip in a number of ways. For me I narrow it down to where I badly want to go and then figure out how much it will cost. From here I can add or subtract locations or side trips. As I'm currently beginning to plan a trip to Europe I thought I might walk through the process and demonstrate at least how I begin to put a trip together. Do be aware that the costs listed below are from internet searches I performed on January 30th 2008 and should be understood to be samples of potential prices only.

Recently my Dad (who has never been to Europe) asked me to go with him and show him around at the end of April. After prodding for specifics his only request was that it be Italy, Spain or Germany. With only about 10 days to spend overseas I decided against Germany. Although Germany is probably my favorite country in Europe, Italy or Spain can really give the first time traveler to Europe a sense of being in Europe in a small amount of time. In Italy you have the normal circuit of Rome, Florence and Venice all within relatively close proximity to each other, making for easy and quick train travel. In Spain, my favorite cites Barcelona, Girona, Granada, Seville and Madrid, are likewise relatively close and inexpensive. Personally, there is so much about Germany I love which is at different ends of the country a quick 7-10 day trip would not be enough time.

With my location dragged down and a trip duration in mind I begin with the most important part of a trip to Europe, the flight. Using kayak.com I start by plugging in the major airports I would like to fly in and out of. Since we want to go to Italy we can start with (for simplicity wounds) New York to Rome with flexible dates during the time frame I can get off work. Of course you will want to plug in the nearest international airport to you. Searching within the last week of April through the first week in May I found the cheapest flight to be: NYC- to – Rome from the 29th through the 9th = $ 756 With this as my working number for ticket prices I look into other possible cities to fly into for cheaper tickets NYC – to – Florence from the 29th through the 13th = $ 956 —- nope NYC- to – Venice from the 26th through the 10th = $ 850 —- nope NYC- to – Milan from the 25th through the 9th = $ 852 —- nope Not finding anything cheaper I then start thinking about flying into one city and flying out of another. This has the benefit of saving the time (which is limited) of backtracking as well as the cost of an extra train ticket back. Since my working plan is to fly into Rome and visit Venice last I check these two cities on the dates of the cheapest flight above. NYC- to – Rome: Venice- to -NYC from the 29th through the 9th = $ 852

For $ 100 more I can eliminate 4-5 hours of travel as well as a train ticket that will cost at least $ 100 one way. So far this looks like a better deal. Just for the sake of argument then, why not check into what it would cost to throw in a wonderful Spanish city, Barcelona. My Dad wanted to see Spain and an over night ferry from Barcelona to a city near Rome is reliably fun and cheap when you will think about the cost you will be paying for accommodation anyways. NYC- to -Barcelona: Venice- to-NYC from the 29th through the 9th = $ 816

Well, we almost saved 40 bucks and get to see Barcelona. If we can get from Barcelona to Rome for around $ 40 we are actually making money (well not really but you get the idea). Sticking with the ferry idea for now a quick check of directferries.co.uk gives me: Barcelona -to – Civitavecchia (near Rome) (20 hours overnight) = $ 65 on Grimaldi Ferries Considering accommodation is going to be anywhere from $ 25- $ 35 in Rome or Barcelona and we saved $ 36 on the flight by going into Spain this sounds reasonable for a quick visit to Barcelona and does not cost us more at all. For even more savings we can try to fly from Barcelona to Rome but we must keep in mind that 1. It will not be an overnight flight so accommodation will be an issue again and 2. Budget airlines do not usually fly out of the major airports, making travel outside the city and issue. None-the-less checking clickair and ryanair for a few samples does not hurt. clickair has Barcelona- to – Rome (Fiumicino) on the 2nd = $ 29 (the 2nd though is a bit late) ryanair has Barcelona (Girona) – to – Rome (Ciampino) on the 1st = $ 20

All in all we now know that stopping in Barcelona is a great idea and getting to Rome will be cheap and easy. With our air plans figured out we can start to look at what this trip is going to cost us in ground transportation. I prefer trains over renting cars in Europe; I just can not relax in a car and the cost of gas and concentrating on the road usually outweighs the freedom. With that in mind it's time to figure out if buying point to point tickets is cheaper than buying a rail pass. My rough plan is to fly into Barcelona head to Rome (fly or sail) then go from Rome to Florence to Venice. Ill check the cost of point to point tickets between these cities as well as a few side trips to get a spread of costs using the worksheets at noambit.com Rome- to -Florence (1-2 hours) = $ 65 Florence- to-Venice (2-3 hours) = $ 58 Rome- to -Pisa (3-4 hours) = $ 47 Pisa- to -Florence (1-2 hours) = $ 19 Florence- to-Rimini (1 hour) = $ 50 Rimini-to-Venice (1-2 hours) = $ 70 With these numbers we can see that our simplest trip, Rome, Florence, Venice, is going to cost roughly $ 123. Our most expensive plan, Rome, Pisa, Florence, Rimini and Venice is going to come in around $ 196. A quick look at rail pass prices shows us that we will only really benefit if we want to do the longer trip and then only barely. A four day rail pass (you can travel for any four days within two months) runs about $ 202. About the same as our long trip but also with an included 20% off discount on the ferry from Barcelona. The problem I see here is that traveling that much, especially since we are adding the city in Spain, is not going to give much time to see anything. At this point I'm going to opt to pay full price on the ferry and buy point to point tickets in Italy. Even adding Pisa on is only going to cost about $ 134 total.

To this point, assuming we throw in Pisa (a day trip) on our way to Florence and pay full price to take the ferry over from Spain we are looking to spend about $ 1015 to spend 10 days and see five cities in two countries in Europe. Its time now to figure in accommodation. A rule of thumb for me is to plan on spending a minimum of $ 50 a day for a bed and food. Sometimes this is high (not very) sometimes this is low (more and more each year). For the sake of demonstration however I looked up budget hotels and hostels for the locations I plan on visiting to get a rough idea of what I will be spending. 30th April – Barcelona = $ 20- $ 35 1st May – Boat to Rome = already figured in 2nd-4th – Rome = $ 20 (camping) $ 30 (hostel) 5th-6th – Florence = $ 15- $ 25 7th-8th – Venice = $ 45

What we end up with is a range of $ 200- $ 265 that I need to budget for accommodation. Adding in food takes a bit of guess work but $ 15 dollars a day is a good workable number. If need be you could eat twice at a Mc Donalds and "live" or grab some bread and cheese from a grocery store and still have some left over for a couple slices of pizza or Doner Kebab. Of course if you are going to Italy for the food or wine you will have to plan on spending more money but $ 15 should get you by. Our final cost is going to be the sight seeing and extras (taking the metro, bottle of wine, train reservations). Since my Dad has never been there I will want to show him the Vatican museum, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, The statue of David, la Sagrada Familia and a variety of other things. For a trip like we have planned above, in Italy for only 10 days, $ 150- $ 200 should be fine.

When all is said and done I can count on spending around $ 1365 – $ 1480 for the whole trip. This, as we have seen is rather bare bones so there is not a lot that can be cut if this were out of my budget (which it is very close to being). I could of course opt out of going to Pisa but extremely in terms of trains this only saves me $ 10 and that does not seem worth skipping a city I have never seen. What you will decide to cut (sometimes the duration you're overseas or how many cities you can see) will depend on what is important to you on this visit to Europe. What is important is that you find a way to fulfill your dream of traveling to your country of choice and I hope that this article helps you find a way to make it work with a limited budget.

How to Plan a Caribbean Vacation in 5 Easy Steps

A vacation is something we all need or think we need at one point or another in our lives. Life may be getting stressful or you might have time away from work. Maybe you came into some money and want to get away to relax. A Caribbean vacation is the perfect thing to do with it. You will have the experience of a life time and memories that will last forever through photographs and in your mind. There are a few important steps you need to follow in order to get ready to go and everything set into place.

Get a passport. You can not travel in and out of the country without having one. You also want to make sure you have it ahead of time so that you're not stuck waiting for it to arrive and stressing whether it will or not. Some places also require a visitor's visa along with your passport so check ahead of time. This will ensure that you're not stressing out at the last minute.

Pick where in the Caribbean you want to travel to. There are a few different islands that are available to travel to and each of them has their own recreational opportunities. People who want common locations will probably hit up Jamaica while those who want some seclusion and privacy can hit up. Lucia and Antigua since they're also gorgeous places to visit.

Select the type of vacation you are planning on taking. A cruise vacation is a very popular type for people because they get to enjoy the sea while experiencing new places. Not everyone is fond of being on a boat though and in these situations it may make more sense to choose a vacation at a resort which offers all the opportunities you could hope for. Some of these vacations are all inclusive and include everything that you would probably need while traveling and give you the ultimate experience as well.

Decide the type of vacation you are going to take depending on how many people are going to be in your party. Cruises are ideal for families, singles, and couples as well since there is something for everyone to enjoy and the reserves cater to this demographic. Some resorts are also suitable for families and singles along with large groups of friends. Your family would probably enjoy spending their vacation at one of the popular resorts like the Beaches Negril Resort & Spa and the Antigua St. Louis. James' Club.

Know when your ideal vacation time is going to be. Flexible dates allow you to save money. Traveling packages are always more expensive during the winter months when people want to go enjoy the warmth. This is from December to April. The summer months of June-August will give you cheaper prices if price is an issue for you.

Be sure to have all of your clothing packed ahead of time and definitely do not forget to have your camcorder to capture those special moments.

Forehead Sweating – The Top 5 Causes

Some things are easy to hide like the helm that comes a loose from your pants. Then there are other things like hiding forehead sweat and that’s like trying to stop the rain. And as hard as it is to keep profuse sweating unnoticed, imagine how impossible it is to camouflage forehead sweating. What’s even worse is sweating starts without warning. Your face begins to get hot from the inside out. Next, you start to shine, then beads of sweat begins to roll down your face. Last but not least, you are sweating like a fire hydrant, full force with no cut-off valve. This common occurrence for excessive sweating sufferers is irritating and aggravating, not to mention embarrassing. Unfortunately, the common causes of forehead sweating are everyday activities in most of our lives.

Most people don’t really know that excessive sweating affects 3 percent of our population. Part of the reason for that is because our medical professionals didn’t see it as a serious problem. When patients would schedule an appointment because of excessive sweating; we’ve heard, some reported sentiments such as: go home and stop complaining. Those professionals were obviously uninformed and didn’t realize the psychological side that’s associated with over-sweating.

Most likely if you are a victim of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), you may have experienced this. While modern medicine still doesn’t quite know exactly how to stop excessive sweating or what are common causes, there are clues from other sufferers that have gone before you.

There are many causes that seem to bring about forehead sweating, listed below are a few of them. Keep in mind that they will vary from person to person.

Anxiety: Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic trigger that goes off when we are under pressure. A few symptoms of anxiety; racing heart beat, stomach butterflies and the jitters.

Stress: Stress is an emotion that’s unavoidable. We all experience stress in our daily lives. However, chronic stress can be very detrimental to our over-all health.

Anger: Unless you are Mother Theresa; anger is something that you have experienced. Anger normally builds up fast and ferocious. It’s normally a gut reaction to a situation or problem.

Fear: Fear is a crippling emotion. It’s an emotion of thought. Many times we are fearful of the unknown. We become fearful when we lose the ability to think rationally and logically.

Excitement: Building excitement takes a lot of energy. Burning the necessary amounts of energy causes our bodies to heat up and once we heat up, the brain reports to the nervous system. It sends a signal to keep us cool and this process is known as sweating.

There you are, 5 underlying causes of forehead sweating. Emotions are one of the main causes of forehead-sweating. The average person has a tendency to sweat when they are nervous, stressed, angry, excited or anxious; but those that suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) will NO Doubt sweat. And more than likely it will show all over their face.
