This summer my 11 year old Godson, Kendon, is spending a few weeks with me. Despite having an 11pm bedtime, he tends to wake up every morning around 6:30 am and this morning was no different. In my hazy fog of sleep, I could hear the "bing" as he turned on the X-Box so that he could watch Power Rangers on Netflix. Luckily, I had set him up with a pair of headphones, so I never had to hear the TV and could sleep in perfect silence.

Shortly afterwards, I decided that it was time for me to get up and get ready for the day. As I made Kendon a bowl of oatmeal, he took his headphones off and approached the kitchen. My first thought was that he was hungry and wanted to know what I was cooking for breakfast. But to my surprise he asked if he could stay home from summer camp today and work on making a paper boat.
Exactly one week ago, I explained to Kendon that in one week there would be a paper boat challenge where the winner would win a prize.
I took the time to explain to him what a paper boat was and we even watched YouTube videos of last year's challenge. I then told him that it was up to him to figure out how to make the paper boat and to determine what type of paper to use.
Six days went by and Kendon did not utter a sound about the paper boat. I thought that he had completely forgotten since he is so engrossed in the Power Rangers during every waking moment of the day.
So that's why I was taken aback when he woke up remembering that the challenge was today.
I took a few moments to figure out how I wanted to answer this question. Part of me wanted to allow him to stay home and we could make the paper boat together because I really wanted to make a boat and enter the challenge myself. But the other part of me saw this as a learning opportunity concerning procrastination. So as I faced him, I decided to tell him no.
I rarely tell ever him no, since I only get to see him once a year. But I knew that this lesson would stay with him for a lifetime.
I gently told him that waiting to the last minute was not the proper way to do things. I reminded him that he had all week to work on the paper boat but chose to do other things like watch the Power Rangers in his spare time. I ended by explaining to him the importance of priorities and planning.
As he sat at the breakfast bar eating his oatmeal, he looked like a sad puppy. His melancholy face almost made me give in until I asked him what was wrong. He replied by saying that he "really messed up" and he was very upset with himself. That's when I realized that the critical view of one's self that a majority of adults possess, start at moments like this.

And I was not about to let my own Godson put himself down so it was time to raise his self esteem up!
The following things that I told him can apply to anyone who needs a little help with self-esteem.
1. Accept your mistake. Once you have made a mistake, do not ignore it, accept it. What is done is done. Move forward by either fixing the mistake or letting it be. Not all things can be fixed so ask for forgiveness and let it go.
2. Do something that feels good. After you make a mistake, you feel bad about it. So replace that bad feeling with a good one. Do something that you know will be a smile on your face. For Kendon, I knew that he loves to eat chicken. So instead of packing some boring lunchmeat for his lunch, I replaced it with two pieces of chicken from last night's dinner! That put a huge smile on his face.
3. Learn from it. There's a life lesson in every mistake. So take a few minutes to think about what lesson the universe is teaching you at this moment. Your mistake is an opportunity for growth and development. Kendon learned that preparation is important and procrastination may cause you to miss out.

Last minute holidays are always the most successful and energizing ones. We live in a world where planning is critical due to our hectic schedules and lives, but once or twice a year we get to go on direct holidays where relaxation, fun, recharging our batteries is what we do all the time.

Whenever we plan our holidays, usually something will come up, like a last minute project, or a last minute business trip, or some kind of a family event, problems with the kids or the wife, stuff like that can totally ruin the will to go on vacation.
As last minute holidays are always unplanned we do not have time to worry about details, details can be really bugging and can take up a lot of our time, so we will feel the need to allocate time to plan details as well. Some people over do it. So it is not advisable to pay attention to details. Just let loose for once. After all, that is all what last minute holidays are all about.
That is all, vacations in general, are all about. No worries, no cell phones, no responsibilities, no one to bother us, just relaxing in the hot summer sun, or the fresh mountain air, climbing hills, discovering territories, visiting history sites, visiting other countries, capitals, remote places or villages , experiencing other cultures.
These are the stuff we do on last minute holidays which will recharge out batteries for sure, and we will be able to continue our hectic daily lives back at home when our vacation is done. When it comes to the vacations season, and most of the time of the rest of the year, many travel companies have special offers for so called direct holidays.
If you are thinking about where to go on your vacation you should really check out one of these offers that come in special packages with special prices for airline tickets, special prices at the hotel in the place you choose to stay in and so on. When you ask for help at such a travel agency, you should leave some notes about what places you want to visit and for how long you want to stay in one place, so they can get in touch with the local hotels and airline companies, and depending on how earlier you plan your trip you will be able to get discounts and special offers.
So that is the opposite of the last minute holidays, when you carefully plan it and save some money. However, planning is boring and monotony is killing the life out of people, so last minute holidays will always be pleasant. It all depends on what kind of a person you are, but even if you are very taken take a chance and let yourself lose on last minute holidays for once.
If you are obese, this does not mean that this is the end of your life because there are many obesity solutions out there. Anyways, you should always try out the ones which suit your needs to prevent any adverse effects. Here are some which you can try them out.
Do not compare yourself to others if you want to get rid of your obesity problem successfully. Since everyone is different, you might lose motivation to lose weight if you compare yourself to others. Your friend might be able to lose weight faster than you, so what? Who cares anyway? The most important thing is to find a weight loss method which is suitable for you. Different individuals have different needs and you are not doing your body any good by comparing yourself to others all the time.
If your husband and you are trying to lose weight at the same time and he loses it faster than you, do not be depressed. It has been shown that men have a faster weight loss rate compared to women and this might be due to the fact that women are the ones who give birth to children. They may need more fat compared to men to support possible pregnancies. Therefore, if you are a woman and you want to lose weight, set a more realistic goal instead of something same with your husband. You will lose weight historically if you are doing the right ways according to your pace.
Do not take the easy way out. Taking pills, signing up for celebrity-approved courses and also using slimming potions are not the recommended ways to lose weight. The best ways are still eating right and exercise. Weight loss methods such as pills or courses might provide you with temporary weight loss results only. Even if they really work, they might give you some side effects which are much more harmful than your unwanted pounds. Lose weight healthily is the best choice you can ever choose.
That time of the year is finally here. You know what I’m talking about, the one or two weeks you get every year to escape from “real life” and just be you. Relax, eat and drink well, enjoy your family, catch up on some much needed sleep. But, before you pack up and head out, rethink the all-too-normal hotel stay. Believe it or not, you have options, one of which is the vacation rental.
Wouldn’t it be nice to leave your own home, arrive in your destination city and settle into a “home away from home” for your next vacation? That’s what vacation rentals are all about. These are homes waiting to be rented out by people on vacation. Each vacation rental owner will have different criteria in what type of renter they are looking for, each vacation rental house will vary in amenities, and each price will be dependent on the time of year and the length of stay. So, it sounds like a great idea, but how do you figure out how to make it all happen? Not a problem. Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions regarding vacation rentals. Read on, my friend, your next “home away from home” vacation rental is right around the corner.
Frequently Asked Questions on Vacation Rentals
What are the advantages of a vacation rental?
Do you ever wish your hotel room had just a little more personality? Yeah, I thought so. Well, renting someone else’s home for your vacation might just be the thing you’re looking for. Usually offering larger living spaces than hotel rooms, these vacation rentals are all about living like you were in your own home. They offer greater privacy than hotel rooms and most rentals have a kitchen area for cooking, which in the end will save you money if you prepare some of your own meals.
You’ll enjoy several rooms, and maybe even different levels, instead of one big room where the whole family sleeps. Many owners will leave information on things to do and see in the local area. Vacation rental homes are clean, friendly, comfortable and inviting. This is because many of them aren’t just rental homes, but also function as the owner’s own residence for part of the year.
A majority of vacation rentals tend to be cheaper on a per night basis than their hotel counterpart. By renting directly from the owner you will avoid taxes, tips and other extraneous charges. However, there is a wide variation among costs based on a number of factors (see How Much Should I Expect to Pay below)
What are the drawbacks of a vacation rental?
Of course, there’s always the other side of the coin. As vacation rentals are not usually monitored by a central managing company, you’ll only know what you’re getting yourself into when you actually arrive to your rental. Many owners require pre-payment, or at least a large deposit fee, before arriving. Therefore, if things aren’t the way you anticipated after arriving, or if you find your dwelling unacceptable and decide to head to a local hotel, you may lose any money you prepaid. This is also true for last minute cancellations. There isn’t usually a refund. You always run the risk of getting less than you expected, but, it’s rare.
Most times, vacation rentals tend to be cheaper than an average hotel room per night. But, not always, so make sure you are comfortable with the price you will be asked to pay.
Another disadvantage to vacation rentals is the lack of a managing member on site to deal with any problems that you may encounter with the home or during your stay in general. Most owners get around this by having a list of emergency numbers, utility companies and other such items available to the renter should they need anything.
What amenities are included in a vacation rental?
Since every rental is owned by a different owner, each will include different amenities. Some come with swimming pools, hot tubs, others with golf packages, and horse stable privileges. In cities with tourist attractions, some owners include tickets to local attractions.
Most vacation rentals come with the essentials: TV, equipped kitchen, towels, linen, and everyday appliances, but it never hurts to ask these questions when searching for the perfect place. Be sure to understand exactly what you are paying for before sending in the payment.
What types of rentals are available?
Pretty much any type of dwelling that you would want to live in during your vacation is available somewhere. From studios in downtown Manhattan to a villa in the south of Spain, you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for. The range of available options is mind boggling. Additionally, each week, month and year there are new possibilities as owners put their homes up for only certain weeks or months of the year, the choices are constantly changing.
Are vacation rentals only available in the US?
Vacation rentals are available worldwide. They can be found in every state of the US and almost every country in the world. Don’t be fooled by their different names, though. Vacation rentals are also known as holiday cottages, tourist rentals and holiday rentals. If you are looking for one in Europe, the Italians call them agriturismi, while the French say gites. If you are in Germany you will be looking for ferienwohnungen (yep, try to say that three times fast with a bratwurst in your mouth!)
Regardless of what you call it, though, a vacation rental is a great option for those getting ready to take a few weeks off from reality and enjoy the good life a bit.
How do I find a property?
There are several ways to go about finding the perfect vacation rental for your next trip. Check with your local travel agent to find someone in your area that specializes in finding owners and renters and getting them together. Another option is the yellow pages. Finally, there is a wealth of information on the Internet. Type in a search for “vacation rentals” and over 13,300,000 websites can be found just on http://www.google.com alone. Some websites only list vacation rentals in the United States while others specialize in vacation rentals worldwide. There are some sites that will allow the potential renter to look for a residence by specific search criteria such as a particular destination, certain number of bedrooms and types of amenities that are included in the property.
Most of the vacation rental services on the internet are only the “go-between” or the “classified” section of the newspaper. They take no responsibility for the truth or correctness of the ads that are listed on their sites. So, do your homework by making phone calls, speaking with the owner and asking specific questions. Make sure you feel comfortable with the answers, if not, move on to the next rental, there are plenty.
If you’re not comfortable with the whole renter/owner thing, there is another way to rent a vacation home. Some companies exist that strictly buy and rent out homes to vacationers. They offer a bit more security so that you feel you are truly getting what you bargained for (although nothing is ever 100% fool proof). Additionally, sometimes these agencies will give you cancellation insurance. In other words, if you cancel before arriving, they may be able to refund a portion of your deposit or payment instead of keeping it as most owners do if a cancellation occurs. With some agencies you’ll find that you pay a higher price than going directly to an owner. This is how the agencies make their profits. There are always pros and cons to each scenario. Ensure you know which one works best for you.
How much should I expect to pay?
This is a tough question to answer. The amount you pay will depend on what country or state you are visiting, number of days you are staying, and type of house you are renting. Some owners offer package deals including tickets or sightseeing events along with the rental, others include bonus days if you stay for a certain length of time. There are other owners who may offer free or add-on house cleaning service with your stay while some go to great efforts to ensure you have everything you need, even additional items such as a crib, highchair or wheelchair. Each vacation rental will be entirely different than the next. Your best bet after deciding on your destination is to review multiple rentals to determine which is better suited to your needs and overall budget.
Are there any hidden fees?
Hidden fees usually only emerge after you have arrived. These may include extra for phone calls, house cleaning service, extra person fees, excess heat and air-conditioning bills, pet deposit, computer access… etc. Again, be extremely thorough when interviewing the owner of your prospective vacation rental. Ask about any “extra” fees, or if the house is “all-inclusive”. Do you have free access to all the pantry and food items? How about the laundry supplies? All utilities? It never hurts to ask!
In summary, cover all bases by asking lots of questions. Getting your agreement in writing is also a very smart idea. After these basics are out of the way you will be ready to take off for your home-away-from-home vacation rental. Try one this year and see for yourself that vacation rentals can be a fantastic means to really getting the full enjoyment out of your next vacation.
Do you agree that we men will sacrifice anything in exchange for the staying power in bed? This is an open secret that no man should be ashamed of. Sex is natural. It is an integral part of life. Some men tend to keep it to themselves when they are having a sexual stamina problem. Let’s face it guys, if you don’t fix it, don’t expect the issue to go away by itself.
Sexual stamina has become a big issue and there is a huge demand for the solution. The drug companies have come up with indirect solutions like sprays to slow down an ejaculation, specialty condoms, and some kind of miracle drugs. Do these help? I have tried them all. They do help to a certain degree, but only temporarily. You see, if the root cause of the issue still remains, no matter how many miracle pills you take or how often you use the sprays on your organ, the problem won’t go away.
What’s the alternative then? Can we achieve sexual stamina without pills or sprays? Yes, we can. Lasting longer in bed can be achieved by natural means. Take a look at the list below, and you will be surprised how many options we have to get rid of this problem once and for all and improve our sexual stamina.
1) High-Protein Diet:
A healthy high-protein diet will provide direct benefits for any man who needs to add extra minutes during sex. Nuts, grains, olive oil, salmon, sardines and a variety of fish have proven to help men go longer during sex.
This technique may be new to you, but it has been practiced for hundreds of years by men with high sexual prowess. It is believed that those notorious lovers in history like Casanova practiced backpedaling to satisfy their women. A competent lover will know when to pause. I know this is tough. I understand that when you are in the middle of action and the level of pleasure is approaching the point of no return, it is extremely hard to stop. But this is a technique that can be mastered. You can control your ejaculation if you practice.
You have to pull the brakes and do whatever it takes to keep yourself from going over the edge too soon. You may be arguing that the climax is rightfully yours to enjoy, therefore you don’t have to wait for anybody. Yes, the sexual climax is definitely your right, but don’t you think it is better to take her there first? Mutual pleasure is always better than one-sided pleasure. Focus on giving her pleasure not on yourself. Practice and your endurance will come naturally.
There are people who’ve managed to travel the world completely free or at very little cost. It proves that you do not have to have a lot of money to travel. All you need is to be creative. Here are 20 easy ways in which you can stretch your travel dollars.
1. Start saving
As a part of saving for your trip, make a plan. When planning, in one column list all the things that you would like. In another column list how you can reduce or eliminate these costs. Project how much money you will now need and save towards it.
2. Sign up for flyer miles benefits
Many companies now offer these as part of their product offerings. For example, banks will offer travel points on credit cards whenever you travel and use them.
3. Look out for airline ticket deals
Popular airlines often have ticket deals and sales for certain times of the year. Schedule your trips around these times so that you can save on airfares. Also, schedule your flights for the middle of the week when most business travelers or vacationers don’t fly.
4. Scout for destination packages
These are great ways to save money. You can get all-inclusive packages, especially at resorts, for less at certain times of the year.
5. Check with your employer
If you work for the government or for a large corporation, check with your employer to see which destinations worldwide have benefits for employees when they travel. Make use of these benefits and save your money. Travel with proof from your employer to your destination. These may even still apply even if you are a retiree.
6. Check with your school
If you are a student, especially a college student, check with your school for travel benefits that they may have for students. You may also be able to access international programs for students that will save you money when you travel.
If you are in high school, get your parents or guardians to look for locales for possible school trips. There are normally discounted group packages that will save them money and are cheaper than if they were to do it on their own. Usually, a teacher or school employee will chaperone the students on the trip.
7. Join a charity or religious organization
There are some charity and religious organizations that have overseas missions. As a member on a mission, you will get to travel for free. However, please bear in mind that you are on these trips to assist others and not for your own self-gratification.
8. Make a travel budget
It is very tempting to get carried away while traveling. You will come across many things to spend money on. Make a travel budget and stick to it.
9. Stay at cheaper accommodation
If you are not on a travel package that offered you hotels at cheaper rates consider accommodation that will cost you less but are still safe. These include bed and breakfast offerings in private homes, rooms on university campuses, convents, motels and cottages.
10. Try couch surfing
You may have a friend or family member living in another country. If they don’t mind having you, consider staying with them instead of paying for accommodation. Another thing you can try is a house sitting arrangement. This is where you occupy and watch over someone’s property and their pets while they are away. Lastly, you can join couch surfing communities where you can connect and stay with locals for free.
11. Walk a lot
Save money by using your feet and not spending it on taxis or Uber. You can also wear a pair of smart shoes during your trip. Not only can it guide you and give you directions, but also burn calories as well.
12. Rent or buy your own transportation
Instead of paying for taxi rides to places, consider renting or buying your own transportation. Two-wheel vehicles, such as bicycles, scooters, or motorbikes, are normally the best to rent or buy as they cost less. You will get more mileage out of these to go many places at less cost.
13. Use electronic guides
There are now many kinds of guides that you can access to help you get around your vacation locale. You can access many of these GPS applications on your mobile phone. This will help you to save money on tour buses and tour guides.
14. Cook instead of purchasing meals
Don’t consider cooking on a trip a chore. You can make it fun by trying out some new foods where you are. Buy fresh food at their local market and experiment with some new dishes. You can do an internet search to find out how to cook them, and it does not have to be elaborate. Not only will this save you money but you get to learn about cuisine in another culture.
15. Look around for meal deals
Meal deals are not only available at international fast-food restaurants. You can find these elsewhere too. For example, buffet style restaurants, where the size of the dishes far outweigh what you pay. There are also all-you-can-eat restaurants and other places that offer discounted meals on certain days. Some of them don’t mind you leaving with a “doggie bag” either.
16. Drink boiled water
You don’t have to spend money on bottled water, which can add up. Use the regular water from the tap and boil it. Cool it and drink that. You may even use it to make drinks instead of spending on those too.
17. Entertainment deals
If you took a vacation package then you don’t have to spend extra on entertainment. This will be provided on a nightly basis for free. If you are traveling solo, due to negative worldwide events, avoid entertainment late at night and in certain places. Consider a local movie or concert.
18. Use your debit or credit cards instead of cash
Make sure your card doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee. Then, if you have to pay for something, use your debit or credit cards instead of cash. You may be able to save money on the currency exchange differential depending on which country you’re in. Additionally, your card may have benefits such as insurance that protects your purchases or points that you can cash in for something else later. Every little benefit helps.
19. Shop at discounted stores
You don’t have to buy stuff in expensive shops for visitors or tourists. Duty Free shops in airports and shops in hotels charge way more for the same items than you can find in a local discount store. Look around for these, they shouldn’t be that hard to find.
20. Gifts for others
If you must take back gifts for friends and family, go for inexpensive items. Small souvenir items are great and you don’t have to buy them at expensive souvenir shops catering to tourists. If you go out an explore, you can find them gift ideas in local stores and craft markets.
Well it is literally the last minute. Christmas has arrived, Hanukkah is half-way through and you are still without a gift for that important person. Last minute shopping syndrome can hit any of us, and often at the wrong time. You may have forgotten an anniversary, a birthday, a festival like Christmas or anything equally unforgivable. And we know this, because we too have been through it at some point of time. To help you cope with that last minute stress of buying a wonderful gift, we give some top class gift suggestions that you can use.
These are often the most obvious choice. Most departmental stores stack them too, often giving a choice of different retailers. Pick up a card that is more specific to your loved one's needs. Or if you are literally at your loved one's doorstep while making a purchase, try buying online cards from your mobile phone. You could download these quickly and email them to your loved ones immediately.
Thanks to the digital age, gifts can now be downloaded quickly and easily. You can choose to purchase music, books on to kindle or Nook, using a wide range of available e-retailers. What's more, you can even download photographs or artwork referring to your favorite artists. If you have a ready photograph of your loved one, you can also popart it and email it to them as a Christmas gift. This can later be printed on to a medium of their choice.
If you want to retain the charm of a real gift, which involves teasing the gift wrapper off, you can consider a gift of art. However, this means that you will have to go to a store and purchase a piece. You can instead simply pick up a piece of art online and ask it to be shipped to your loved one. However, if you are at his or her doorstep, do inform them that graciously special gift is on the way for them, which inadvertently got delayed with the festive rush.
Create an opportunity
While many gifts are received on Christmas or special occasions, use this time to create an opportunity for a gift that comes later. Use the services of a professional photographer or use a good camera to take good pictures of the occasion. You can create interesting photo collages or pop art versions of these photographs that can be used for gifting later. Such gifts will be more cherished, as they will capture the essence of the occasion and create lasting memories.
Photo art is a unique gift, that is useful not just now but forever. It helps capture important moments of life on the timeless frame that stays on for generations to see. Give the gift of art to people what you really love and care about. And when you do so, you ensure that your gift and along with it your love and affection for the people involved stays young forever.
You’re on the funding round trail to secure cash to boost your start up or to take your existing company to the next level. If you’ve tried and failed at all the sources you could try without leaving your office, and you simply must travel with following seven suggestions for getting you there – and back – without doing it on a wing and a prayer, and without giving your bank balance too much of a pounding.
- Why are you booking all this travel? Yes, I know, you couldn’t get funding sitting in the office. But that’s why you’re travelling, not why you’re booking it. Get a travel agent involved. They’re specialists and you’re not. Every trade has its tricks, and the travel business is no different. Giving a list of dates and destinations, and let them iron out the hassle. You could spend the time saved with the family to iron out the hassle of being away on another business trip. Hey, I’m just saying…
- Set the rules. Don’t let the travel agent upsell you into upmarket hotels with complicated pillow menus and in-room saunas. You’re trying to generate cash on this funding round, not spend it. The hotel room is a place to sleep for one or two nights; you’re not moving in. Set a budget and have them work within it. Being clear at the outset helps them to help you.
- Get on the chain gang. There’s something comforting in the familiar, and that’s what you’ll find if you work with the same chain of hotels. What’s even more comforting is that you’ll be able to tap into loyalty schemes that will make your trip cheaper. We’re trying to raise money here. See tip 2.
- Travel light. You can move faster if you travel light. Get your packing down to a fine art, and manage with a carry-on bag. Be sure it’s a size that airlines will accept, and you can be the first to the cab rank when the flight’s landed, rather than watching a broken push-chair trundle round the baggage carousel. Look, it’s coming around again… I wonder if your case has gone to Birmingham, UK, rather than Birmingham, Alabama? Maybe that’s why it hasn’t appeared yet… Oops…
- Eat out. What kind of crazy advice is this? Why would you eat out, when you’re staying in a hotel? Well, a couple of reasons, actually. Firstly, if you’ve squeezed the budget very tight, you may well be staying in an hotel with no restaurant, but even if you’re not, getting out in the evening will get you some exercise whilst you’re walking around to find the right kind of eatery, and secondly, you’ll get a flavour of the city you’re visiting, and that’ll come for nothing. Exercise and sightseeing at no cost? What’s not to like?
- Whose money is it anyway? If you’re on the hunt for finance, chances are it’s your business that’s footing the bill, so consider this. How about paying for your own meals? It’s what you’d do at home, having shopped for groceries or picked a restaurant, so why not do the same on a business trip? In the grand scheme of things, it might save only a few pennies, but hey, it’ll all add to the profitability, even if only a tiny bit. Travel expense management software is a brilliant tool for keeping track of what you’ve spent, allowing you to reassure yourself that you’ve had value for money.
- OK, you win. So, you want to do it yourself, all this travel booking malarkey. Go ahead – but do me a favour. Use some travel and expense management software. Failure to do that means the whole thing will be out of control, and no matter what it says on the plane ticket, you won’t know where you are financially.

"I never go on vacation," said a Manhattan real estate agent. "And when I do, I have my computer, my Palm, my e-mail and my cell phone with me at all times."
It seems that our tech toys have become the adult equivalent of an umbilical cord. So how can we live without them?
And what about now, when, as a good citizen, who also does not want to get arrested, you at least have to end your plane trip without their nourishment and comfort? Let's do a checklist of tech tonics that can cause us to experience separation anxiety.
Your laptop. No more making the flight a window to catch up with your work or idle the time away with a video game. Even if you're reunited with the high-tech marvel after the flight, what if you're on a tropical island, marooned on the coconut garden without a high-speed Internet connection?
Your cell phone. No more last minute chats before takeoff or immediate reconnection on landing. How bereft can life get?
Your Palm or Blackberry. Can not take either of those on board either, and, as you know, out of phone numbers and email addresses, out of business, worse yet, cut off from your entire social life, at least, for the seemingly eternal length of the flight.
Your MP3 player. No, no, anything but that! How will your soul survive the deafening silence?
And the relationship to separate from our tech tools is not the only reason many Americans are related to take the vacations that once flew out of their office chairs for. Most Americans also fret, in these days when what used to be called workaholic hours now seem more like half days, that the employee will use the occasion to replace you with someone who has shown promise of never needing something as irresponsible as a vacation, at least, not one that goes on and on for that long ago and faraway interlude of two weeks.
What's an exhausted and tense person to do? Here's our humble but functional answer. Most years we take long weekends, with only an occasional year in which we indulge in a flagrant week or two away from our day-to-day entanglements. We find the possibility of frequent breaks inviting, and we do not get taken out of our lives the way the extended vacations of yore used to separate us from our usual doings. We also find that most of the world is within reach during these three-day to five-day intervals.
Of course, if you're thinking of heading to Australia or the Far East, you may be doing little more than making a U-turn, so better reserve those destinations for the rare times when you dare a week or – dare we even mention the words? – two or even three weeks?
Then again, you can always decide to move to a vacation destination forever, especially when you compare the length of the idylls in other parts of what we loosely refer to as the civilized world.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, as of 2004, in the US full-time employees have 3.9 holiday and vacation weeks off a year, while in the UK they have 6.6 weeks, in France 7, and in Italy 7.9.
But do you really want to part with the good, young USA for an extended or everlasting break? For most of us the thought remains an occasion for separation anxiety that we simply can not endure.
Many accommodation providers such as hotels, motels and serviced apartments often have a percentage of their rooms remain unsold in the normal course of business. They sometimes refer to these rooms as “distressed inventory” available at a discounted price. This allows them to realize revenue that would not normally be received. Rooms made available on websites could be discounted by as much as 60%. The term generally used to describe the discounted room rates is last minute accommodation rates or short rates.
You may ask what’s in it for the hotel?
Discounting is not a new concept in this industry, though it has normally been promoted via corporate rates or bulk purchases. This new online delivery of room rates allows the accommodation providers to offer specials to the larger public. Like yesterday’s paper, the supplier would still rather have some revenue for the room than none at all.
A great tip for finding special rate deals is by typing “last minute accommodation rates” and the name of the city into your web search. Although there are many websites promoting these offers, a quick scan of the result pages will reveal those websites that display multiple offers on a single page. This makes for easy comparison between various suppliers. The full or rack rate together with the discount rate could be displayed and the magnitude of the saving becomes apparent.
Tips on booking your stay:
Last minute booking services are almost exclusively advertised online. This is because of the instant confirmations, live updates on availability and the huge audience that now exists online.
But when anyone provides credit card details online, they need to be as vigilant as if they were handing some cash on the street :
– Make sure that the payment pages are secured with HTTPS, as opposed to the regular HTTP address.
– Make sure the website has acceptable terms and conditions, you don’t want to be left empty handed because of the small print.
– The uncertainty of online transactions has led many suppliers to ask for a deposit, instead of full payment up front. This is a reasonable approach, as you would not normally pay for your stay until departure.
– Lastly, make sure the website offering the discount is providing confirmation of your payment and reservation.
Some services offer to “register your interest” and only when you have paid, will they check availability with the hotel or Motel. You may as well just call the provider yourself, if this is the case.
Though it should not need to be said, remember to take receipt of your online booking for check-in. Or if necessary you can call prior to confirm your booking and maybe also advise of check-in times, special needs or requests etc.
When booking your stay for transit over early morning departures, most providers have dedicated sections for accommodation listings close to the airport and also offer a free service or parking for up to a week. Alternatively you want to make sure a shuttle service is available from the motel or that they can organize such a service.
Typically last minute accommodation rates generally apply to the next 4 weeks or 28 days only. So for those spur of the moment spontaneous decisions it is ideal. Remember last minute rates are generally for two people only and you need to inquire if additional people can be accommodated and if so what the charge will be, check for any inclusions or extras on offer too. Inclusions can prove to be of excellent value and include such offerings as free breakfast, a bottle of champagne or drink voucher or perhaps a free shuttle service to and from the airport.
